How Long Does It Take to Charge an Electric Vehicle?

2022 Hummer EV

Confusion about electric car charging times might be a factor that intimidate Lakeland shoppers away from embracing this incredible new technology. Don’t let that be you! EV charging might require changing some habits, but ultimately it pays off in significantly lower fuel costs. How long does it take to charge an electric vehicle? That depends on which of three charging options you’re using. Learn more about EV charging with the team at Kelley Buick GMC, Inc., then shop our new inventory to stay in the loop on what electrics vehicles are available from GM.

What are My Electric Car Charging Options?

  1. Level 1-Domestic Outlet Home Charging (Regular Outlet): Winterhaven homes don’t need any new equipment for this charging, which uses a standard three-prong 110V/120V outlet. However, this is the slowest form of EV charging. Your electric car charging time with level 1 charging will take around 24 hours to get a full charge. Use this method overnight to top off your battery for your morning commute.
  2. Level 2-Installed Brand-Approved Domestic Charging: Contact your Aurburndale electrician to install a level 2 charging station in your garage and your EV charging will become super easy. A home DC fast charger can often provide an 80 percent charge in half an hour to forty minutes. The last 20 percent will take longer, but it’s still a faster electric vehicle charging time than level 1 can offer. You can charge your car overnight and have a full battery in the morning.
  3. Level 3-Public Charging: Public chargers are becoming easier and easier to find all the time. Stores, parking garages, hotels, and more are offering high-speed charging stations that provide the speeds of level 2 when you’re on the move. Some public chargers offer rapid charging based on higher kilowatt outputs that can take you from zero to full in an hour or so. Some public chargers even offer emissions-free renewable energy charging with solar panels or wind turbines!

If you drive a plug-in hybrid you’ll have even lower electric vehicle charging times. It usually takes one to four hours to fully charge a plug-in hybrid battery.
