How to Reset the Tire Pressure Light

TPMS Light on Dash

Most modern vehicles have a TPMS, or tire pressure monitoring system. This system uses sensors connected to your vehicle’s computer to tell you if the inflation on one or more of your tires is too low. A warning light on your dashboard tells you that the TPMS detects low pressure, and the warning light should turn off after you inflate the tires properly.

If your tire pressure light remains illuminated after you’ve inflated the tires, you may have to reset the tire pressure light on your own. Your tire pressure monitoring system is critical to the safety of your vehicle, and it has to work properly. The light will need to go off in order to warn you of any future tire pressure problems.

If you’re running into problems with your TPMS light staying on despite fixing the tire pressure, take these steps to try to remedy the situation. Even better, bring your vehicle to the service center at Kelley Buick GMC, Inc. near Winterhaven. We’ll be happy to help you!

How to Reset Tire Pressure Light

After you properly inflate your tires, the tire pressure light should deactivate on its own. If it remains on, there are a few actions you can take to remedy the situation. Follow these steps to try to rectify the situation of your tire pressure light staying on:

  • Drive at or above 50 mph for 10 minutes. This can cause your sensor to reset the next time you turn on the car.
  • With the vehicle off, turn the key to the “On” position or push the button to the accessory position. Don’t start the car. Hold the TPMS reset button until the tire pressure light blinks three times. Then release the button. Start the car. Wait 20 minutes for the sensor to reset itself. The tire pressure monitor reset button is usually located beneath the steering wheel. If you can’t find it, check the user’s manual or driver information center through the touchscreen.
  • Inflate all tires to 3 pounds per square inch over their recommended amount, then deflate them completely. Be sure to include the spare tire, as it may have a sensor as well. Once they’re all deflated, reinflate them to the recommended tire pressure. This should reset the tire pressure sensor and the TPMS.
  • With the vehicle off, disconnect the positive battery cable with a wrench. Turn the car on and honk the horn for about three seconds. This will discharge any power still stored in the battery. Then reconnect the battery. Disconnecting the battery means you may have to reset the time on your clock as well because all power was turned off.

What Does a Flashing Tire Pressure Light Mean?

Tire pressure sensors often use a battery separate from the main battery. A flashing tire pressure light may indicate the battery within the system needs to be replaced. There may also be a problem with one of the sensors. Either way, schedule service at Kelley Buick GMC, Inc. near Lakeland.
